The Lead Software Integration Manager role is a very challenging and important role within High Speed Two as Software is in the top three critical risks to the overall success of the HS2 Programme. Crossrail is an example where ineffective software management resulted in considerable programme overrun, hence this role will provide control management to the Software risk

Lead Software Integration Manager is required to work for the Client Organisation (High Speed Two Ltd) responsible for the New High-Speed Rail project in the UK. The Lead Software Integration Manager role is within the Systems Integration department part of the Chief Engineers Group. Reporting to the Head of System Capability and Functional Integrationthe Lead Software Integration Manager role is a technical leadership role responsible for assuring and managing contractors involved in software development for railway systems managing 2 Software Managers + consultants. Working on Phase 1 of the project, which, is valued c£60 billion has 10 years left to run with the Software Integration Team & the wider system integration department will be required to the very end & likely into service, excellent opportunities for development and progression.

Job overview
The Lead Software Integration Manager provides leadership for the system software integration ensuring that the HS2 railway delivers the end-state railway performance for passengers, operators, and the public.
Key elements include:
- Create and maintain the software integration strategy, plan, and process, Developing Software System Integration requirements
- Create and own Software Integration delivery roadmap with the subsystems’ contractors
- Own, and manage software integration program and change control log
- Ensuring that the contractors’ software developments adhere to code of practiceÂ
- Perform Software audits to determine readiness for software candidate releases
- Liaising with T&C to ensure System Integration delivery cycle is fulfilled
- Review and accept software deliverables by the contractors
- Collaborating and working closely with the contractors with regards to programme, deliverables, and Test and commissioning
- Work closely with Rail Systems SMEs and Integration Managers to ensure subsystems requirements are realised within the developed software solution by the contractors.

The Lead Software Development Manager will be responsible for ensuring that all the software systems being developed for HS2 – Signalling System, Train Control System, Train Management, Train Infotainment, Customer Information systems to name a few are done correctly. HS2 are looking for someone who has managed such software development activities in the past and so can ask the right questions, understand the risk, hold the contractors to account (Challenge them) to derisk the projects.

The office location is London, Euston (preferred) thought will consider other locations for the right individual, they operate a flexible hybrid working model working around 2 days a week from the office. Overall, this is a very flexible modern employer who cares about delivery not where you deliver from, however, if you wish to be based front the office more you can.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead delivery of the HS2 Software Integration workstream to ensure that HS2 railway will deliver the required end-state railway capabilities for passengers, operators, and public
- Provide leadership and management of the Software Integration function ensuring the technical deliverables achieve the right quality, along with supporting the project manager to deliver to time and to budget
- Define and own the methodology to deliver the Software Integration workstream and lead collaboration with stakeholders across the HS2 programme to ensure that suitable resources, tools, and process are in place to deliver this
- Acting as the Software technical single point of contact, representing the HS2 Prime System Integration,
- To accept the contractors’ SW development and quality assurance plan,
- To ensure compliancy to the SW System requirements,
- To validate the contractors’ implementation of the SW relevant standards and best practice.
- To perform audits on the contractors SW developments and
- To agree on the released software maturity before being tested and deployed

- Provide engineering leadership and systems integration thinking, acting as a key leader and communicator for the implementation of SW systems integration across HS2
- Plan and manage work so that it aligns with the overall HS2 delivery schedule
- Works as a proactive member of the functional integration team within the HS2 Systems Integration department. Provides timely information on the progress of own work, and direct reports, including risks and issue, progress against plans, metrics and KPIs as appropriate to the type of work
- Acting as the prime integrator of the Software integration and takes full accountability of the Software roadmap throughout the full engineering cycle including testing and commissioning stages and the HS2 phase opening
- The custodian of the Software delivery programme to ensure on time system integration milestone deliverables
- Ensures that safety is fully considered throughout the Software integration process.
- Use of best practice systems engineering techniques, technologies, and processes, driving consistency, and helping to identify opportunities for efficiencies across HS2

Candidate Criteria
Looking for Candidate with considerable experience in Software development / Software Management within the Rail Industry. Will have managed software development activities of Railway systems such as - Signalling System, Train Control System, Train Management, Train Infotainment, Customer Information systems etc and will be proficient with all necessary rail software standards i.e. CENELEC standards as detailed below.

Ideal candidate will have undertaken roles such as Software Engineering manager, Software Integration Manger, Head of Software development / engineering working for railway companies, contractors and Consultants involved in development of Railway subsystems (Signalling, Rolling Stock, Scada, Communication etc).
Will have Hands on experience in the Software development and management of Software delivery in complex programmes similar to HS2 i.e. Crossrail, HS1, Thameslink etc
This role wouldn’t be suitable for Systems Engineers or Software test engineers/ Managers, nor IT managers or IT engineers, or cyber security Managers/ Engineers
This is a senior profile role that manages a critical area that is embedded within all Railway subsystems, hence the candidate is competent on both technical and reporting on the risks with innovation approach and above conventional skills.
Highly confident and experienced in the Railway industries that will comprehend the terminologies and able to communicate and report at all levels, furthermore to chair technical meetings and technical reviews with contractors, internal and external stakeholder

- Ability to provide specialist technical direction and leadership on systems and subsystems Software integration to project development / delivery teams
- Ability to ascertain when to seek further support from other Subject Matter Expert or others
- Ability to provide technical, commercial management and leadership skills to support project development / delivery teams, working under supervision of line manager (or delegate)
- Ability to assimilate a wide range of multi-disciplinary information, problem solve and articulate systems engineering solutions, and the ability to use software management tools such as DOORS, JIRA, Polarion, etc.
- Ability to communicate complex technical ideas to a wide range of audience at all levels
- Ability to formulate multi-disciplinary technical integration recommendations to peers and the senior leadership team
- Ability to apply principles relating to standards, safety, and the environment and able to articulate these to a wide range of senior stakeholders.

Knowledge:
- Experience and practical ability in software development (both backend and frontend), software integration, software testing, Cyber security, techniques, and tools
- Experience and practical ability in software development languages and interfacing protocols for subsystems of high SIL rating
- Understanding of systems engineering and a range of sub-systems involved in railways
- Experience in creating SW System Level Requirements, and perform software audits throughout the SW development lifecycle
- Understanding and application of the relevant CENELEC standards e.g. BS EN 50126, BS EN 50128, BS EN 50129
- Commercial awareness including understanding of cost delivery, schedule targets and the need to deliver an integrated solution that meets all functional requirements

- Experience in software development and managing end to end software deliverables on large complex major projects/ programmes within a complex infrastructure delivery programme, and in a safety and security critical environment.
- Experience in managing a team of SW developers and testers throughout the delivery lifecycle
- Experience in collating, analysing, and communicating data to wide range of stakeholders
- Experience of managing competing project and engineering demands, with cost and schedule implications.
