Looking for an Environmental Consultants to work on a major contracts on HS2, interested in candidates from general environment, acoustic, carbon, ecology, air quality indeed any environmental background to work as an Environmental Manager on major civil contract. Degree qualified or equiv. ideally with some site experience, excellent opportunity for career development through to Senior Environmental Manager.

The Client organisation who are building and then operating UK’s High Speed Rail network, are looking for an Environmental Manager working within the integrated projects teams on a BBV Main Works Civils contract reporting to a Senior Environmental Manager. Working on Phase 1 of the project, which, is valued c£60 billion and has 10 years left to run.

Working within the integrated (client/main contractor) project teams on HS2 the Environmental Manager is responsible for providing professional and technical support in the assurance of achieving compliance with environmental minimum requirements (Carbon, biodiversity, noise & vibration, air quality etc), design and construction is in accordance with organisational and sponsor requirements and policies, environmental commitments, environmental law and regulations. This role is also responsible for providing guidance on environmental design solutions and ensuring environmental issues and constraints are key considerations in project design.

‘£6bn Main Works Civils - Coleshill
The Environmental Managers is required on the largest single contract on HS2, the Main Works Civil Contract is the BBV JV (Balfour Beatty, Vinci plc), £6bn - 90km line of route consists of 42 Viaducts, 66 bridges, 35 cuttings, 56 culverts, 66 embankments & 4 motor crossings. The scale of the project is huge with one single site on the project, Washwood Heath Depot is currently the largest brown field regeneration in the UK.

Working Situation – Co located / Hybrid
The Environmental Manager will be site based with the expectation to work 50% from the site and 50% from home (5 days a week over a fortnight) – the site is located in Birmingham Coleshill (BBV).
The client team are working alongside the main contractor (Co-located) in the same site offices, the role requires individuals with the correct behaviours – collaboration, engagement, stakeholder management skills who are able to drive the best from the relationship, pick up on problems as they arrive and resolve quickly rather than waiting and reviewing once the problem has manifested. The Environmental Manager needs to be proactive lead integration and facilitate change not just sit back assure and review.

Duties & Responsibilities
- To be responsible for supporting technical assurance through production, checking and submission of assurance evidence for technical stage gates, assuring the design and construction of the assets comply with the technical and sponsor requirements, environmental commitments, environmental law and regulations;
- To be responsible for supporting the Senior Environment Manager in organising, coordinating and undertaking the environment element of the HS2 risk based technical assurance of the works performed and assured by the Integrated Project Teams (IPT );
- To be accountable for Authorising Mandatory Approvals: by assuring that contractor designs and construction works are undertaken in accordance with the Environmental Minimum Requirements (EMRs), with particular emphasis on the General Principles and the CoCP. (note - client assures consistency of application);
- To be accountable for managing and communicating HS2 Environment & Sustainability requirements to the Integrated Project Teams’ contractor;
- To be responsible for providing guidance for environmental design solutions for the asset and ensure that environmental issues and constraints are key considerations in project design;
- To be accountable for supporting the Senior Environment Manager with internal and external reporting of environmental matters;
- To be responsible for liaising with technical stakeholders via various forums at local, regional and national levels and the local community on sensitive issues;
- To be accountable for working alongside other technical specialists to develop appropriate and cost balanced mitigation strategies and solutions.

Required Criteria
The role requires a Degree (or equivalent) Environmental Consultant, Advisor, Manager – could be from any Environmental specialism – Environmental generalist, acoustics, ecology, carbon, air quality, contaminated land specialists etc. Open to a range of backgrounds due to large project team with lots of different specialisms with the opportunity to learn and use their combined knowledge.
Will ideally have some site experience and understand how to deal with contractors, sub consultants (supply chain) on site and contractual circumstances
Interested in talking to  Environmental Managers with experience of civils contracts will have some infrastructure, rail, utilities, civils experience (or something similar) – also open to Airports, Stations, major construction etc.
Have understanding and experience of EIA’s and or Environmental Minimum Requirements. knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, policy, processes and best practice.Â
The candidates can be from client, consultant or indeed main contractor and have the correct behaviours to manage the unique structure of the project (co-located in the same offices) – Collaborative, open communicator, proactive & Integrator. In addition candidates must be excellent communicators with  the confidence to communicate & manage the supply chain often more experienced thank yourself.
